Protein Shake or Meal Replacement Shake, THAT is the Question!

Is there a difference between a meal replacement shake and a protein shake?

If you are following a low carb/ high protein diet, it may not always be possible or practical to prepare and eat a meal that fits in the diet during your lunch break. If you consider the condiments, the meat and all of the rest of the ingredients of a healthy sandwich or salad, measured out it is nearly impossible to carry a cooler containing all of the fixings for the sandwich or salad that would fit into the diet plan. Remember that everything has to be premeasured and the calories and carbs have to be calculated so as to consume just the right amount of calories, carbohydrates and protein. Filling your cooler could be complicated and time consuming. With today’s uber-busy schedules there is a demand for a simpler approach to the dieting dilemma. Predominately the answer started as a protein shake and has developed into today’s meal replacement shake. They are now complete with vitamins, minerals and can even include peptide amino acids, probiotics and digestive enzymes.

In recent years there has been an uprising in the popularity of protein shakes. Once people started becoming aware of the nutritional needs the protein shakes morphed into meal replacement shakes. There is a very distinct difference between protein shakes and meal replacement shakes. A protein shake is just a concentrated protein powder that can be mixed into liquid like water or milk. A meal replacement shake contains multiple vitamins and minerals to help with all of the nutritional needs that you would normally receive if you were eating a healthy meal. Protein shakes still exist but they are really only a supplement for body builders. Meal replacement shakes are far more versatile when it comes to having all of the nutritional needs a meal needs to provide. Meal replacement shakes are designed to REPLACE one or two of your daily meals. Meal replacement shakes are specially formulated for weight loss and weight maintenance. These shakes are designed to give you a wide range of essential nutrients in a low calorie meal substitute, rich in proteins and low in carbohydrates. Meal replacement shakes have some advantages over choices like sack lunches from home and fast food/ restaurant food as well. Below are a few great advantages that good healthy meal replacement shakes have over other types of meals.

      Advantages of Meal Replacement Shakes

Meal replacement shakes or protein shakes are:

      • More practical either at work or while on the run. All that is needed is a container of the meal replacement shake, a mixing glass and access to the liquid of choice (i.e. water, skim or one percent milk or even fruit juice).
      • Convenient! Whether you are at work, at play, running somewhere or sitting down to relax the things needed to make a meal replacement shake are minimal and easy to carry around.
      • Meal replacement shakes reduce the need to think about food during the day. Sometimes it becomes an annoyance to decide what you are going to eat and where you are going to get it from. A meal replacement shake solves all of those dilemmas. All that you need to decide on is which flavor you want.
      • When you drink a meal replacement shake all of the calorie counting has been done. There is no need to look up the calories of each ingredient and calculate how many you are actually consuming.
      • Meal replacements are economical too. A tub of powder that contains thirty servings should cost less than fifty dollars. That makes each meal replacement cost a low one dollar, sixty seven cents ($1.67). It’s hard to find anything nutritious in that price range!

Whole food should be your first choice but when the situation does not allow a meal replacement shake is healthier than filling up on junk food or skipping a meal altogether. Always remember that when using meal replacement shakes as a part of your diet limit yourself to replace no more than 2 of your meals with meal replacement shakes. You do need solid foods in your diet and just as “man can not live on bread alone” man can not live on meal replacement shakes alone either.

What should a healthy meal replacement shake contain?

This is a subject that has been researched over and over. There is new information all of the time but the basics never seem to change. The first and most important thing is the protein. There are three different sources of protein to base a meal replacement shake from:

      • Whey protein is fast-absorbing and high in all the essential amino acids and branched-chain amino acids. Whey protein is derived from the process of cheese-making from milk. There are two sub-types of whey protein: whey concentrate (29–89% protein by weight) and whey isolate (90%+ protein by weight). Great after intense workouts. Whey is definitely the best protein to use if you are replacing meals.
      • Casein protein is slow-absorbing and the main protein found in milk. Casein provides a sustained slow release of amino acids into the blood stream over several hours, improving its use by the body. This protein is good if you need a protein supplement but are not concerned about weight loss or weight reduction. This protein is also hard to dissolve in liquid so it makes a better protein bar than a protein shake.
      • Soy protein is a plant-based source of protein making it suitable for vegans. However, soy is also the most allergenic food to humans after peanuts. Soy protein tends to be more popular with women. Preliminary findings of a study published in medical journal Fertility and Sterility (December 2007) suggest that a daily serving of soy may prevent postmenopausal women from gaining fat around their abdomen (stomach area). Soy is a feminine plant and contains large amounts of estrogen. And even though the isoflavones only mimic a weak form of human estrogen there is a great deal of conjecture and concern about hormonal balance and the use of soy protein. Soy protein in our opinion is the last choice as the source of protein for weight loss.

Next are the supplements… I know, I know, when this is going to be an integral part of a weight loss regimen the calories, carbohydrates and fat grams might go here but without proper supplements this shake might as well be just a protein shake. To replace a meal it is so important to get all of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals from the shake. A meal replacement shake should contain a range of vitamins like vitamin A, a full range of the B vitamins, vitamin C and even vitamins E and K. There should be minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium. All of these should meet the FDA’s recommended daily intake suggestions. While we are here reading the label there should be some concern that the sodium is fairly low and that there is some fiber included in the meal replacement shake.

      • Peptide amino acids; Other supplements to look for in a really complete meal replacement shake would be a complete chain of peptide amino acids. There are some amino acids that are contained in the actual protein its self, however there are about six essential amino acids that are not produced or extracted from protein.
      • Omega three fatty acids are also important supplements. They are great anti oxidants and rumored to be great brain activity food. Omega three’s are produced by krill, a small shrimp-like organism found in the northern seas and oceans.
      • Digestive enzymes are another important supplement. During our younger years we produce plenty of enzymes to digest even the most difficult foods but as a rule when we grow older our enzymatic production slows and needs to be replenished.
      • Probiotics; These are sometimes called the “friendly bacteria”. Many of the prescription drugs and antibiotics that are taken to prevent colds, flu’s, infections and other diseases are harmful to the flora, friendly bacteria, contained in the digestive tract. Lately there is a movement to supplement with probiotics. With that in mind why not have probiotics in your meal replacement shake.

The carbohydrates, calories, fat content and protein content are important to consider. These are really the foundation of the meal replacement shake.

      • Carbohydrates: Are the food source that convert into calories or energy. There are good and bad carbohydrates. Some carbohydrates that are easily converted into glucose like refined sugars and starches will add weight and create health issues like diabetes. The best sources of carbohydrates are whole grains, vegetables, fruits and beans. These sources promote good health by delivering vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a host of important nutrients.
      • Calories: A calorie is a measure of energy, just as a volt is a measure of electricity, a pound is a measure of weight and a mile is a measure of distance. The body needs energy (“calories”) to do anything. Most good meal replacement shakes designed for weight loss will have less than two hundred calories. This leaves the human body with fewer calories than it needs to digest the meal just eaten. In theory the body would then draw upon the stored energy (fat) to do any other work and finish digesting the meal. There are some suggestions that meal replacements shakes can contain more calories but remember calories that are consumed and not converted to energy are stored as fat.
      • Fat content: Dietary fat comes in different forms. Some fats are necessary and beneficial, others are not. Fat can be broken down into saturated fat, unsaturated fat and trans fat.
        • Saturated fats; are derived from animal products such as meat, dairy and eggs. But they are also found in some plant-based sources such as coconut, palm and palm kernel oils. These fats are solid at room temperature. Saturated fats directly raise total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Conventional advice says to AVOID them as much as possible. More recently, some have questioned this, as there are different kinds of saturated fats, some of which have at least a neutral effect on cholesterol. If you want to see the effect of saturated fat from beef you can try this experiment. Take a bowl of spaghetti sauce and place half of it in a second bowl. Add some browned ground beef to one of the bowls of spaghetti sauce. Use a spoon to stir the contents and mix the ground beef in. poor the spaghetti sauce from both bowls over your noodles and enjoy the spaghetti. After eating the spaghetti rinse the two bowls out with plain water. You should see that the bowl without the browned meat in it doesn’t rinse as easily as the bowl without the meat in it.
        • Trans Fats or Hydrogenated Fats; Trans fats are actually unsaturated fats, but they can raise total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels while also lowering HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Trans fats are used to extend the shelf life of processed foods, typically cookies, cakes, fries and donuts. Any item that contains “hydrogenated oil” or “partially hydrogenated oil” likely contains trans fats. Hydrogenation is the chemical process that changes liquid oils into solid fats. We are just on the cusp of understanding just how harmful trans fats really are.
        • Unsaturated fats; Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are two types of unsaturated fatty acids. They are derived from vegetables and plants.
          • Monounsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature but begin to solidify at cold temperatures. This type of fat is preferable to other types of fat and can be found in olives, olive oil, nuts, peanut oil, canola oil and avocados. Some studies have shown that these kinds of fats can actually lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and maintain HDL (good) cholesterol. They also aid in the digestion process and help to maintain healthy skin. Monounsaturated fats are absolutely necessary in a healthy diet. They should be consumed in small amounts with almost every meal.
          • Polyunsaturated fats are also liquid at room temperature. These are found in safflower, sesame, corn, cottonseed and soybean oils. This type of fat has also been shown to reduce levels of LDL cholesterol, but too much can also lower your HDL cholesterol. It would be okay to cook with these oils from time to time but really olive oil, sunflower seed oil, grapes seed oil and peanut oil are much better for your overall health.

IBW is most effective when using all of the above criteria to create the core of a meal replacement it would be a shame to ruin it with artificial flavors. That is why the only flavoring we would allow in this wonderful meal replacement shake had to natural. We chose to use ingredients like organic cocoa, vanilla bean and even strawberry pulp. After that we chose sweeteners like honey crystals, stevia and lohan. This shake mixes well in water, juice or even milk and almond milk. IBW has been taste tested by kids because we know that kids don’t lie when it comes to the flavor or texture of what they eat. They either like it or they don’t! And kids love our protein shakes. Moms are surprised when their kids ask for more. Our testing theory worked because IBW won the “People’s Choice Award” at the NNFA trade show. IBW contains peptide amino acids, omega three fatty acids, digestive enzymes and probiotics. IBW tastes great, it mixes easily and it actually replaces the meal its supposed to without making you bloaty or gassy like some other drinks do.

      SlimSmart also offers:

      • Less than 2 grams of fat
      • Less than 2 Net Carbohydrates
      • Low in Calories
      • Low Cholesterol
      • Great Anti-Oxidant

The Executive Life Diet exclusively endorses Ideal Body Weight (IBW). Feel this healthy meal replacement/supplement beverage is. IBW provides natural fiber, from apple pectin, for your diet needs. This formula has the optimal ingredients that improve your daily nutritional reqirements.

The Executive Life Diet model is "The closer you are to nature, the healthier you will be". IBW contains protein that originate in one of just two places in the world. Once the milk is produced the protein is extracted in a process that keeps the temperature low so as not to "kill" it. You can buy the second rate "dead" proteins in almost any other brand.
Once we found the source of our protein we made sure that everything we combined it with in the IBW formula was of the highest quality and mixed to perfection.
You will not find lumps in your shake with IBW nor will you get a chalky aftertaste. We know that you'll love it because children were our taste testers. We all know that kids don't lie about the taste or texture of the food they eat. We knew that IBW was a winner (taste wise) when the children asked for more!!!
